Activity Holidays

Activity holidays are types of holidays that involve a little more activity than a regular break. Here, the emphasis will be on doing something specific during the holiday rather than just relaxing on the beach doing nothing. These organised holidays can be geared around physical activities or they may be based on other pursuits.

For many people activity holidays are all about being active. They may, for example, go on a sailing holiday where they learn how to sail or a diving holiday where they learn how to dive. They’ll still get plenty of time to relax on their break but they will also be learning something specific or doing something that they enjoy at the same time.

Sometimes this is an appealing prospect to people who have a specific skill or sport. They may not go on activity holidays to learn anything new but simply to have a good time doing what they enjoy and what they may not normally have time for with like-minded people. So, for example, experienced hill walkers could go on a walking holiday or rock climbers could take on a peaks challenge as part of an organised group.

For others activity holidays may be a little more sedentary rather than active. It is quite popular, for example, to go on arts and craft related holidays where you can learn a new skill and practice it during your break. So, for example, you might go on a painting holiday in Italy. Here, you can learn how to paint from scratch or simply brush up on your skills and get some painting in along the way.

Cooking activity holidays are also becoming more popular nowadays. People who like to cook could arrange a short break or a holiday based at a cookery school. This could be located at home or abroad and they could spend their time learning how to cook regional dishes or a specific type of cuisine that they are interested in.

Active or not activity holidays are all about doing something that you’re interested in. Sometimes, doing more on a holiday can actually be more stimulating, enjoyable and relaxing than spending a week or two in the sun at the beach. For many this is all about learning new skills. For others it may be about doing something that they enjoy. Generally speaking, this can be a fun way of taking a break in an unusual and exciting way.
